Willman among NTA Awards Recepients

The Nebraska Tennis Association Hall of Fame & Awards Banquet was held Nov. 1, 2015 at the Fremont Golf Club. The Banquet was hosted by the Fremont Tennis Association. The keynote speaker was Dan James, US Open Wheelchair Competition Tournament director. He became a member of the USTA’s national wheelchair coaching staff in 1998 and is the current men’s head coach.

Willman Award Willman among NTA Awards RecepientsMike Willman was inducted into the Nebraska Tennis Hall of Fame for his intensity and drive towards the sport of tennis with his goal to keep tennis a viable sport for all to enjoy. He began playing tennis in high school and has been playing tennis in Fremont since 1985. He currently serves as president of the Fremont Tennis Association and secretary of the Nebraska Tennis Association.

Fremont tennis was recognized in other areas as well.

Wyatt Spalding 2 Willman among NTA Awards RecepientsWyatt Spalding received the Outstanding Diversity Achievement award. He has competed with adversity all his life to play sports. Wyatt started playing tennis at a young age but with his disabilities he had limited playing time. As he got older he played with the Omaha Tennis Buddies and the Fremont Tennis Buddies. Wyatt now plays in open tournaments at the 3.0 level and the Fremont Tennis Association Men’s league. He has played in the Fred Johnson Regional All Star Tennis Event in Kansas City, Des Moines, and Omaha. He won the singles and doubles this year at the Nebraska State Special Olympics in Lincoln..

Diana Myers1 Willman among NTA Awards RecepientsDiana Myers accepted the award for the McDonald’s Jr. Tournament as the Jr. Tournament of the Year. The 41st annual McDonald’s Fremont Junior Open was held in July with a total of 116 players. In addition to the Boys and Girls 12-18 events, there was a red ball event, and orange ball events for girls and boys. McDonald’s has sponsored this event for 41 years!

2015 Hall of Fame Inductees: Jack Mallett and Mike Willman

Guest Speaker: Dan James is the current US Open Wheelchair Competition tournament director. He became a member of the USTA’s national wheelchair coaching staff in 1998 and is the current men’s head coach. As a coach, he has led teams in numerous Paralympics and Parapan games where they have won 19 medals and 9 golds. Mr. James joined the USTA full time in 2003 as the National Manager of Wheelchair Tennis, running training programs for teams as well as managing grass roots initiatives. He is a member of the ITF Wheelchair Coach’s commission and of the ITF Wheelchair Advisory panel which has allowed him to do developmental work throughout the world. Mr. James has been honored with numerous awards both nationally and internationally.

Exhibition: 2 p.m. there will be a wheelchair exhibition/demo at the Fremont Family YMCA located at 810 N. Lincoln Ave. Fremont, NE

Alex Bigsby wins McDonalds Fremont Junior Open 12 Singles

tennis tournament results Alex Bigsby wins McDonalds Fremont Junior Open 12 SinglesCongratulations to top-seeded Alex Bigsby of Fremont who defeated Samuel Johnson 6-3, 6-0 to win the boys 12 singles championship over the weekend in the McDonalds Fremont Junior Open Tennis Tournament. Bigsby advanced to the final by downing Nathan Ramachandran 1-6, 6-1, 1-0 (10) in the semifinals.

Abigayle Bigsby, also of Fremont, went undefeated in her two round-robin matches at girls 10 singles. She beat Kate Denker of Fremont 4-2, 4-0 and Kailee Bailey of Omaha 4-3, 4-1.

In other divisions, Brendan Eglseder of Omaha won the boys 18 singles. Top seeded Alex King of Omaha won the boys 16 championship. Sara Flaxbeard of Omaha was the winner in the girls 18 competition. And Sophie Miller of Lincoln beat three seeded players on her way to the girls 16 title.

Second-seeded Katie Whithead of Lincoln won the girls 14 singles title. No. 1 seed Clare Plachy of Lincoln won the girls 12 division.

In boys doubles, Brian O’Flanagan and Oleynikov worn the boys 16 division. Shelby Henry and Clare Plachy won over Fremonters Lexie Glosser and Olivia Wright for the girls 14 doubles championship.

Anne Wiltfong and Abby Sullivan of Lincoln won the girls 16 doubles division. Heidi Hans of Omaha and Nora Pentel went 2-1 in round-robin play at girls 8 singles. Annalyse Bigsby of Fremont went 1-2, but beat Pentel 4-2.

The winner in boys 10 singles was Caden Haar of Lincoln.

GPAC Championships at Fremont

MidlandUniversityLogo GPAC Championships at FremontThe Midland University Tennis teams will be playing in the GPAC Championships this Friday and Saturday, May 1-2, 2015.

The event is scheduled to be held at Fremont.
