At No. 1 singles, Zach Weaver started off well with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Justin Asuncion of Omaha North. Weaver then lost to Tyler Mercier of Omaha Westside 6-1, 6-2.

Jack Larsen and Alec Richards also won their first match in No. 2 doubles, defeating Sean Clerc and Charles Balston of Bellevue East 6-0, 6-1. In their second match, they fell to Zach Northey and Tom Tipton of Lincoln East 6-2, 6-2.

The doubles team of Tyler Ketchem and Scott Speicher made it through two rounds, defeating Thomas Harris and Austin Braun of Bellevue East 6-1, 6-2, and John Gill and Jacob Slabaugh of Omaha Burke 6-2, 6-3. They lost their 3rd match to Greg Beaufait and Ethan Gart of Omaha Creighton Prep 6-1, 6-3.

Spencer Brown won over Mathias Godsil of Papillion-La Vista South 6-7(2-7), 6-3, 6-4 in his opener at No. 2 singles, and then lost to Lance Kush of Grand Island 6-0, 6-0 in the 2nd round.

Seven seniors competed on the team this year as the top seven players. Head coach Justin Bigsby was quoted in the Fremont Tribune (Fri. Oct 17, 2008) “On the one hand, you have a ton of experience and maturity, but in the back of your mind you keep thinking that at the end of the season you’re going to lose a great group of guys. This has been one of my most enjoyable seasons as a coach, and it’s largely due to this senior group. It’s a State tournament I won’t forget, and definitely a team that I won’t forget.”

No only did the Fremont Tigers win, but they really beat up on Lincoln Northeast. The matches weren’t even close. Way to finish strong.

This event is for any unranked junior tennis player who is looking for a time of fun, fellowship, and tennis. The tennis is designed for those who need more on court playing experience. This is NOT a sanctioned event through the USTA, so it will not provide any points toward a ranking. Players interested in this event should read over the Junior National Tennis Rating Program scale to determine which day (category) to play in. Sincere self-evaluation is important in making the experience most beneficial.

Schedule of play:

• Friday, November 14 - 2.5 and 3.0 JNTRP: 6-9 p.m.
• Saturday, November 15 - 3.5 and 4.0 JNTRP: 2-5 p.m.

Participants will play a round robin format including all players registered for that day.

Cost: $12.00 for Fremont Family YMCA Members, $16.00 for non-members.

Nearly all the matches were close with Zach Weaver losing at No. 1 singles 8-6, Alec Richards losing 8-4 at No. 2 singles, Jack Larsen falling 8-5 in No. 4 singles, and Scott Speicher losing in a tiebreaker at No. 6 singles.

The Doubles matches were also close. Weaver and Richards fell 8-5; Larsen and Charlie Ronan lost 8-4, and Luke Samuelson and Alex Hamilton lost 8-6.

Zach Weaver finished fourth at No. 1 singles, and Spencer Brown was fifth at No. 2 singles.

The No. 1 doubles team of Alec Richards and Jack Larsen placed fifth. The No. 2 doubles team of Tyler Ketchem and Scott Speicher also placed fifth.

Lincoln Southeast was first in the meet.

In singles, Zach Weaver, Alec Richards and Jack Larsen won their matches. All three doubles teams, Jack Larsen and Alec Richards, Tyler Ketchem and Scott Speicher, and Zach Weaver and Charlie Ronan, won their matches.

In exhibition play, Charlie Ronan, Alex Hamilton and George Hartmann won their matches.

Norfolk’s JV team won 11-7.

Singles victories were won by Tyler Ketchem at No. 4, and Scott Speicher at No. 6.

Luke Samuelson and Alex Hamilton got a lone win in doubles at No. 3.

Lincoln Southeast is usually a tough team. It looks like they lived up to their reputation in this match.

Singles victories were won by Zach Weaver, Alec Richards, Tyler Ketchem, Jack Larsen and Scott Speicher. Wins in the doubles category came from Larsen and Richards, and Ketchem and Speicher.

Shut outs (8-0) were recorded by Zach Weaver at No. 1 singles, and by Larsen and Richards at No. 1 doubles.

Way to go team!

Zach Weaver, Spencer Brown and George Hartmann won in singles play against PLVS, and the doubles teams of Alec Richards & Jack Larsen and Luke Samuelson & Alex Hamilton also had victories.

Against Westside, Samuelson and Hamliton picked up the only win for the Tigers.

Men’s Open Doubles:
Mike Willman and his partner, Roland Augspurger of Columbus, were defeated in the 1st round 6-2, 6-2, by Ron Betts and August Hogan of Omaha. Betts and Hogan made it to the finals where they were defeated by the No. 1 seeded team of Scott Broady and David Treichel of Lincoln.

Men’s 4.0 Doubles:
Christ Westergaard and John Waters of Papillion defeated Mike Willman and Rolland Augspurger 7-5, 6-4 in the opening round. Westergaard and Waters lost 3-6, 1-6 in the next round, which was the finals, to Rob Dittmer and Bryan Pregon of Council Bluffs, IA.

Men’s 3.5 Doubles:
Brian Mark and Dana Mark defeated Jerry Pivovar and Michael Pivovar of Omaha in the opening round 5-7, 6-4, 6-3. They were then defeated 6-4, 5-7, 6-3 in the Semifinals by the # 1 seeds Matt Fowler and Paul Rios of Omaha. Fowler and Rios then lost in the finals to the No. 2 seeded team of Dave Blumel and Raymond Montejano of Omaha.

Men’s 3.5 Singles:
Brian Mark was beaten in the opening round by the # 3 seed Dan Hrivnak of Bennington 6-3, 6-1. Hrivnak was the eventual champion, defeating the No. 2 seed, Brad Miller of Omaha. Tough draw, Brian!

In the consolation round, Brian got to the Semifinals when Al Backes of Omaha withdrew because of an injury. In the Semifinals, Brian was defeated 6-2, 6-2 by Joseph Shea of Omaha. Shea went on to win the consolation round defeating Stephen Seyler of Omaha in the final match. So, Brian lost to two eventual champions. Again, tough draw, Brian!

Thanks everyone for representing the Fremont Tennis Association at the Nebraska Open. Now we have the indoor season to prepare for next year, when we’ll go out and leave our mark on Tennis history. At least, Mark & Mark are dreaming of leaving their mark!

The top three doubles teams also did well. At No. 1, Alec Richards and Jack Larsen won their match 8-2. The No. 2 doubles team of Tyler Ketchem and Scott Speicher won 8-4. And the No. 3 team of Zach Weaver and Spencer Brown won 8-1.

The deadline for registering is Wednesday, August 27, one week from today. If you haven’t yet registered for the league(s) or Permanent Court Time of your choice, better do it quickly. You only have one week left.

Erica Dickmeyer played in two events. She played in the Girls’ 18 singles, losing in the 1st round to Alexis Bartek of Lincoln 1-6, 0-6. Bartek was a finalist, so it was a tough draw for Erica. The Champion in Girls’ 18 Singles was Anna Bogdanov of Omaha.

Erica then played against Caitlin Christy of Bellevue in the consolation bracket. Erica had to withdraw due to an injury.

Erica teamed up with Jessica Spalding, also of Fremont in the Girls’ 18 Doubles. They lost to the only other team entered, Heather Hottman and Mary Lausten of Omaha 1-6, 2-6.

Luke Prescott played in the Boys’ 12 Singles. In his first round, he defeated Joshua Gottschalk of Bellevue 6-0, 7-5. He then beat the # 1 seed, Nicholas Tran of Omaha 6-2, 6-0. He then lost to Michael Clinch of Lincoln in the Finals 3-6, 2-6. Great playing Luke!

Luke teamed up with Nicholas Tran of Omaha to play in the Boy’s 14 Doubles. They lost to the only other team entered, Erik Anderson of Bellevue, and Gabe Shrank of Omaha, 0-6, 0-6.

Three Fremont Juniors played in the Boys’ 16 Singles.

Alex Hamilton had a 1st round BYE, then lost in the 2nd round 1-6, 2-6 to the 2nd seed, Eric Binkley of Omaha. Binkley was a finalist, so Alex got a tough draw. The Boys’ 16 Singles champion was Ethan Gart of Omaha.

Alex then made it through three rounds of the consolation bracket defeating Daniel Marty of Omaha 6-2, 4-6, 1-0(4), Ian Jun of Omaha 7-6(6), 6-4, and Tyler Anderson of Omaha in the Quarterfinals 6-4, 6-1. He then lost in the Semifinals to Seth Shimerda of Lincoln 2-6, 3-6. Good run, Alex!

Joseph Hoffman played Ian Jun of Omaha in the 1st round, losing a close match 6-4, 5-7, 0-1(7). He then played fellow Fremonter, Brady Zoucha in the consolation bracket, beating him 6-4, 6-1. In the Quarterfinal round he beat James Richardson of Omaha, 6-4, 2-6, 1-0(9). Way to hang in there Joseph! He then lost 1-6, 0-6 to the eventual consolation champion, Nicholas Amin of Omaha.

Brady Zoucha had a 1st round BYE, then lost a very close match to Nathan Foje of Omaha, 6-4, 4-6, 0-1(10). Brady then ran into fellow Fremonter, Joseph Hoffman in the consolation bracket, losing 4-6, 1-6.

Alex Hamilton and Brady Zoucha entered the Boy’s 18 Doubles. They lost their 1st round match to Ethan Gart and Nicholas of Omaha 6-7(8), 1-6.

Three Fremont players also played in the Boys’ 18 Singles.

Spencer Brown had a 1st round BYE, then lost in the 2nd round to Eric Binkley of Omaha 4-6, 1-6. Binkley was a Semifinalist, so a tough draw for Spencer. In the consolation bracket, he lost his first match 2-6, 1-6 to Zach Clark of Omaha.

Joseph Hoffman played Eric Binkley in the 1st round of the Boys’ 18 Singles, losing 1-6, 1-6. Binkley made it to the Semifinals, so he was a tough player to meet up with in the 1st round. Joseph then made it through two rounds in the consolation bracket, defeating Garin Leehy of Omaha 6-2, 6-2, and Sean Stepanek of Omaha 6-1, 6-1. Joesph then lost the Quarterfinal match 1-6, 1-6 to Gregory Beaufait of Omaha. Good run, Joesph!

Zachary Weaver was the # 1 seed in the Boys’ 18 Singles. He withdrew in the 1st round because of an emergency. Tough break, Zachary.

Here are the results for the Fremont tennis players who participated in the 2008 Cornhusker State Games the past two weekends. Third sets were played as match tie breakers (10 point). Consolation matches were played as an eight game pro set.

Spencer Brown of Fremont played in the Boys’ 18 Singles. He had a BYE in the 1st round, then defeated Matthew Saffee of Lincoln in the 2nd round 3-6, 6-2, 10-4. He was then defeated in the Quarterfinals 0-6, 2-6 by Eric McKnight of Omaha, the # 2 seed and eventual champion. Good job Spencer!

Erica Dickmeyer and Tyler Ketchem of Fremont played in the Mixed 8.0 Doubles. They were defeated in the 1st round 2-6, 1-6 by Heather Blumel and Michael Hess of Omaha. Blumel and Hess were the eventual champions, so Erica and Tyler had a tough draw. They made it into the 2nd round of the consolation bracket where they lost to Jay Barbuto and Michelle Lisec-Talarico of Lincoln, the eventual consolation champions.

Brian Mark and Dana Mark of Fremont played in the 3.5 singles event. Brian lost his 1st round match 3-6, 1-6, to Todd Tabor of Walton who ended up being a finalist. Tough draw, Brian. James Stone of Omaha defeated Todd for the championship.

Brian then played a consolation match against Joseph Mara losing 4-8. Joseph was then defeated by Matthew Binderup of Omaha. Binderup was the eventual champion in the consolation round.

Dana won his first round match against Skip Rice of Omaha 7-6(8), 6-7(5), 10-4. Yes, that’s three tie breakers! Dana then beat the 5th seed, Todd Hultman of Omaha 4-6, 6-2, 10-3. He then lost in the Quarterfinals to Michael Salas of Lincoln, 1-6, 1-6.

Brian and Dana Mark also played in the 3.5 doubles event. Again, a tough draw for Fremont players. Brian and Dana lost the 1st round match 1-6, 4-6 to 2nd seed Bob Branchaud and Richard Robison of Lincoln who ended up being the consolation champions. The champions in the main draw were the # 1 seeds, Brad Miller and Raymond Montejano of Omaha.

In the consolation match, Brian and Dana lost to Donald Ediger and John Keller who ended up being finalists in the consolation draw. They were defeated by Bob Branchaud and Richard Robison of Lincoln in the consolation championship match.

Mike Willman of Fremont teamed up with Roland Augspurger of Columbus in the 4.0 doubles. They were the # 2 seed in their draw. They had a BYE in the 1st round, then defeated Stephan Andersen of Lincoln and Doug Tegler of Eagle in the 2nd round 6-0, 6-0. No mercy! Mike and Roland then lost 5-7, 2-6 in the Semifinals to the # 3 seeded team of Ryan Elwood and Maurice Higgins of Lincoln. Elwood and Higgins were the eventual champions.

Thanks to all our Fremont players. You played hard. You showed the rest of Nebraska that the Fremont Tennis Association has a good tennis program. Thanks for playing!
